Governing AI-assisted software development
How large language models shift cost from authoring to verification, and which governance patterns preserve review quality, security, and clear ownership in engineering teams.
Large language models (LLMs) are now commonplace in editors, terminals, and CI systems. They can accelerate drafting, refactoring, and documentation. They do not, by themselves, replace judgment about requirements, architecture, or risk. Teams that treat generated output as provisional—subject to the same standards as human-written code—tend to capture the productivity benefit without eroding trust in the codebase.

What changes in the workflow
When an LLM suggests a patch, the cost of producing a first draft drops sharply. Reviewers may see larger or more frequent diffs. Security and compliance teams may ask whether sensitive data ever leaves approved boundaries, and whether generated code receives the same static analysis and testing as any other change.

Practices that preserve quality
Treat prompts as informal specifications. A vague request yields vague code. Encourage engineers to state constraints explicitly: language version, frameworks in use, error-handling expectations, and performance or accessibility requirements. The prompt becomes a lightweight spec; the response is a candidate implementation to inspect and refine.
Keep human review mandatory for material changes. Automated suggestions should pass through the same pull-request process as human commits: at least one knowledgeable reviewer, appropriate test coverage or test plans for the risk level, and adherence to team style and architecture guidelines. LLMs can also assist review (e.g., summarizing diffs or suggesting test cases), but the approving human remains accountable for the merge.
Guard secrets and regulated data. Policies should prohibit pasting credentials, personal data, or proprietary algorithms into unapproved external services. Use organizational controls: approved vendors, enterprise agreements, and local or air-gapped models where required. This is standard data handling extended to a new class of tools.
Lean on automated checks. Linters, type checkers, security scanners, and tests provide a consistent baseline. They catch classes of errors that models reproduce as readily as people do. For TypeScript and similar stacks, strict compiler settings and type-aware lint rules reduce the chance that generated code silently widens APIs or weakens invariants.
Document conventions for AI use. Teams benefit from a short, living document: which tools are allowed, how to log or tag AI-assisted commits if useful for audit, and how to escalate when generated code touches safety-critical or regulated areas. Consistency matters more than the exact wording.
Organizational patterns
Some teams centralize “AI literacy” in a working group that shares prompt patterns, reviews vendor changes, and feeds lessons back to engineering leadership. Others distribute ownership: each squad applies the same review bar, with platform engineering ensuring shared tooling (CI, secrets management, dependency policies) stays robust.
Neither pattern removes the need for clear accountability. The engineer who merges a change is responsible for its behavior in production; the model is a tool, not a co-author with liability.
